ONOC support regional athletes

April 30, 2015 7:57 pm

The Oceania National Olympic Committee wants athletes who qualify from the region for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil to have the best support.

This is a major reason why the body has set aside funds to assist those who will fly the Oceania flag in Rio.

ONOC Secretary General, Ricardo Blas, who is in Fiji attending the assembly, says they are trying their level best to ensure teams such as the Fijian sevens team win a medal at the Olympics.

“ONOC has taken the initial step about two months ago, where we have a special funding grant for all regional federations. Already some of the federations are questioning us why the reduction for them. The reduction was to safe guard an x amount of dollars for teams qualifying. It maybe not enough and much but a contribution from ONOC as teams start their preparation.”

The Fijian sevens team is the top bet from the region to win a medal for a Pacific nation at the Rio Olympics.
