New winner to be crowned at National Champiosnhips

Anthony Maelasi of Solomon Islands and Jose Celiz of Palau are expected to provide stiff competition to Fiji’s top players in the National Open Chess Championship.

Both players share an aggressive style which is match-winning and is a strong challenge for local players who will feature in the event.

Top seed and two-time National Champion Candidate Master Calvin Prasad has pulled out of the event due to administrative commitments.

This has paved for a new champion to be crowned in the 5-day event which will see renowned local players like CM Manoj Kumar, CM Ronald Terubea, Tianata Terubea, Keez Terubea, Russell Talonga, Menash Fareed, CM Noel Adricula, CM Goru Arvind and ex-Olympiad rep Taione Sikivou.

The event is open to all members of the public who know how to play chess.

The competition will be held at the FASANOC Olympic House from 8:30 AM tomorrow.
