New caps for Pacific Games

July 2, 2015 4:54 am

Expect to see some new faces in the Vodafone Fiji 7s side that will compete in the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea.

National coach, Ben Ryan says niggling injuries and players taking up overseas contracts has opened up the door for uncapped players such as Abele Yalayalatabua, Keponi Paul to possibly earn a call-up to the national squad.

“One or two others need to get rested, Apisai Domolailai broke his ribs, Josaia Wini is about to go to France. I said before London and Glasgow tournaments that have been training with us like Abele (Yalayalatabua) from the Wardens and Keponi (Paul) and Sitiveni Waqa that they are going to get their chance at the Pacific Games and I’m staying true to my word that they are going to get a run-around.”

In the last Pacific Games in 2011, Fiji settled for the silver medal, after losing to Samoa in the final in New Caledonia.

Ryan will announce his 12-member squad to the Pacific Games tomorrow and the team will depart for PNG on Tuesday.
