Natabua and International dominate Badminton Championship

The Fiji Secondary School Badminton Championships concluded yesterday with Natabua High School and International Secondary School dominating the competition at the Yet San Hall in Suva.

Monica Fong of International Secondary School took out the girl’s single event beating Natabua High School’s Shristy Nandan in two straight sets.

In the boy’s singles event Stephen Zhang also of International Secondary School beat Kevin Sun of Yat Sen Secondary School in two straight sets in the finals to win the title.

While in the teams event Natabua High School won the girls team event beating Yat Sen Secondary School 3 games to nil in a best of 5 matches. The team was captained by girl’s singles runner up Shristy Nandan.

In the boy’s team event, hosts Yat Sen Secondary School won the final in a hard fought victory that went right down to last set, Yat Sen won by three sets to two.

Badminton Fiji development officer Ahmad Ali says with the provision of medal and trophies this year it has really lifted the intensity of the competition.

“Knowing that JR White is a sponsor just lifts the level of competition for students, additionally this year we’ve had different souvenirs who sponsored trophies for us and also we’ve had Janti Khan who sponsored medals for us. So students knowing that we have those prizes available that we haven’t had for a long time now has really increased their intensity on the competition.”

The competition was also a selection base for players in the 2019 Pacific Games.
