Naidau wins first Games medal

On debut for her adopted school, Mereseini Naiday brought smiles to Jasper Williams High by winning the very first gold medal on offer at the 2012 Coke Games.

And sure enough, this win added more sweetness to the Sugar City-based school.

Naidau who outclassed her opponents in sheer style in the open girls 1500m race this morning.

She cruised to the finish line in a time of 5.10 minutes… just under a minute of her personal best.

“The race was really fast and I i was glad that i mamanged to come first. While I was running one of the girls tried to tap me in the second round but I kept on going forward and knew I could do it.”

Her old rival, Akesa Drotini of Adi Cakobau School was nowhere in her sights at the finish line as she crossed the line a clear 80meters from silver medallist, Ana Maria of Vaturova.

The shy athlete was as a silver medalist in the 3,000m final at the Pacific Games in Noumea last year.

She will be chasing down her second gold medal in the 3,000m race which she is confident of winning.
