McKee aims to close gap on Tier 1 teams

October 12, 2015 6:54 pm

Vodafone Flying Fijians coach, John McKee says there is still a lot of work needed to bring the team up to par with Tier One nations.

After an impressive outing in the 2015 Rugby World Cup, McKee says Fiji has the potential to match the powerhouses of world rugby.

“At sometime in the future when we play these big teams, it’s not Tier 1 versus Tier 2. It’s not viewed like that, it’s viewed as equal on the field and the best team will win. I think we’ve made a lot of progress towards that in the 18 months that I’ve been involved but we still have a long way to go.”

McKee adds Fiji needs to play more games against Tier One teams outside the World Cup.

Meanwhile in the World Cup quarterfinals, South Africa will take on Wales at 3am on Sunday, and New Zealand meets France at 7am.

On Monday, Ireland faces Argentina at 12am and Australia takes on Scotland at 3am.

The semifinals will be held on October 25th and 26th while the Cup final will be staged at Twickenham Stadium on November 1st at 4am.
