Majority of sports budget allocation for Rio

Nearly half of the Fiji Sports Commission’s $14 million 2016 Budget request to Government is for preparations towards the Rio Olympic Games.

Fiji Sports Commission chairman, Peter Mazey says it is still uncertain how many athletes will compete in the Games with qualification stages still ongoing but the figure will be enough to cover for preparations without affecting other sporting bodies.

“We very carefully studied this, before we submitted to finance; especially this year with the 2016 Olympics. That’s almost 50% of our funding requests; for preparations for 7s rugby and for the teams going to the Olympics will take up nearly half of the total budget.”
