Lifters eye Youth Olympic Games

Young Levuka-based weightlifters Maria Mareta and Sofia Kinikinilau are trying all means to earn the one spot open to Fiji for the October’s Youth Olympic Games in Argentina.

Both the lifters are vying for a spot in the national squad to compete in the Oceania Championship in Noumea, New Caledonia which act as a qualifying round in the Argentina Games.

16-year-old Sofia Kinikinilau who competed in the 58kg category at the 2018 Vanuatu Mini Games says she is determined to better her lift in Noumea.

“It is a good opportunity for me representing my country and my family. I’m hoping to better my lift this time in New Caledonia and win a medal.”

Meanwhile, Maria Mareta says will focus first on the championship in Noumea.

Mareta competed in the 58kg category in the recent Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

The selection of Team Fiji for the Oceania Championship will be held on the 9th of June.

Competition starts on June 25th and runs to the 30th.
