Kumar, Terubea settle for draw in Open Chess Championship

Manoj Kumar held off a spirited challenge from Ronald Terubea in the final round of the Brijlal Fiji Open Chess Championship as they settled for a draw.

Manoj Kumar won the event with 4.5/5 while the second to fifth positions were shared between Ronald Terubea, Avinesh Nadan, Prashant Sarup and Goru Arvind at 4/5 each.

Tournament Arbiter Hilda Vukikomoala says it was one of the closest tournaments of the year.

12-year old Tanvi Prasad of Deenbandhoo Primary School won the Female Category while open player Kabrina Terubea and Makayla Sukhu of Gospel Primary School came second and third.

14-year old Rudr Prasad of Jai Narayan College complimented the feat of his sister Tanvi by winning the Secondary School’s Category.

The National Chess Championship will follow an international format which will be used in the 2020 World Chess Olympiad at Khanty-Mansiysk in Russia.

Fiji Chess Federation will appoint an independent committee to select an elite team of National reps to represent the country at the Olympiad by early next year.

The next tournament is scheduled to begin at FASANOC Olympic House from 08:30 AM on Saturday 16 November 2019.
