Historic training run for Fiji 7's team on Beqa Island

July 22, 2016 4:30 am

As the Fiji sevens team gears up to depart the country, the team today took its training on the Island of Beqa.

Villagers from the eight villages on the island had the rare opportunity to mingle with our gladiators, who know these supporters just like all around Fiji will be backing the team during the Olympics.

The national side was greeted with a “cere” where ladies welcomed the team with printed cloths, mats and other handicrafts and also a traditional welcome in the Raviravi village hall upon their arrival.

It was a joyous occasion for the villagers and for most it was the first ever face to face meeting with these sevens stars.

Team Manager, Ropate Kauvesi says they chose Beqa Island for training as they wanted to get out of Viti Levu.

“At the end of the day we looked at a place that we can go to that’s close by. Logistically getting the players there and back at a decent time. We chose Raviravi. I came here two months ago having a close look around to see where we can train. We though the Islands would be good because we have always been on Viti Levu and this is what it is all about, the grassroots.”

The Fijiana leave tomorrow while the men’s team leave on Tuesday.
