Govt allocates $16.7m for sports

Finance Minister Aiyaz Saiyed-Khaiyum says the Government is dedicated to promoting sporting activities and develop sporting facilities next year.

Saiyed-Khaiyum made the announcement during the Budget announcement in Parliament today.

The Government has allocated $16.7 million to Ministry of Youth and Sports.

$852,000 will be allocated for the upgrading and procurement of equipment for youth training centres in Naleba, Naqere, Valelevu, Sigatoka and Yavitu.

The 2015 calendar is a busy one for sports with a host of world tournaments for our national teams.

Government has allocated $2 million for overseas tours which included the Fiji U17 men’s football team, Flying Fijians Pacific Rugby Cup, Junior Rugby World Cup, FIFA Under 20 World Cup, Pacific Games, World Netball Championship, Pacific Nations Cup, Commonwealth Youth Games, Rugby World Cup, and Under 17 women’s football.

The Fiji Sports Commission stands to receive $800,000 for its operating grant.

$3 million has been allocated for the upgrade and maintenance of existing sporting facilities including Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.

A further $2 million has been allocated to engage overseas coaches to provide international expertise to boost sports development.
