Fiji Rugby Union Chief Executive John O’Connor believes there is still hope the nation can host a World Rugby Sevens series tournament in the 2019/2020 season.

O’Connor says they haven’t received any official confirmation on the bid from World Rugby.

New Zealand based NZ Herald had reported that NZRU is likely to win the bid and the tournament will remain in Hamilton for next two years.

“We are in a constant contact with World Rugby and in our latest communication they have advised us that they will make an announcement on the bids in September. So we are waiting for the decision. I have seen the reports coming from New Zealand but from our point of view we just waiting for World Rugby to tell us on the outcome in September.”

Meanwhile, the New Zealand Herald also reported that plans are in place to alternate where the tournament will be played between Hamilton and Fiji.

But it will be up to the New Zealand Rugby to host the event where they choose as long as World Rugby agrees.

The New Zealand Rugby won a tender to extend its hosting license beyond 2019 and has decided not to use Hamilton as the venue every year but instead alternate with Suva.
