FRU backs Dere despite results

The Fiji Rugby Union says there is no need to sack Digicel national sevens rugby coach Alifereti Dere.

Calls are being made for the mentor to be axed after a disastrous outing at the Dubai 7s last weekend.

However, FRU chairman Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga says this was not going to happen.

“I ask people who are calling for Dere’s resignation or the player’s release from the team, it’s uncalled for. We have to give everyone a chance. Not every coach…the South African coach has never won consecutive tournaments in a long time but they have never asked for his resignation. He has to go through with the experience. The longer you keep him there, the longer he learns the job. But they still have him there despite all his results, nobody is calling for his resignation, why should we do that to Dere.”

Meanwhile, at the South Africa 7s, Fiji plays England in its first pool match at 10.22 pm on Saturday before battling Scotland at 1.28am on Sunday.

The final pool match is against the All Blacks Sevens at 5.52am.
