Former Fiji 7s rep, Eroni Ravaga-Gaunavou has gone missing at sea off the Tararua coast in the lower North Island of New Zealand.
Helicopter searches for Gaunavou have failed as strong rips and swells have also hindered the New Zealand Police Dive squad from pursuing.
Gaunavou, who hails from Labasa arrived in New Zealand on a visitor’s permit in February to play rugby for Puketoi Rugby Club.
The 22-year-old disappeared while swimming with two other men off of Akitio beach on Monday afternoon.
Police say the long range forecast is not looking good for further dive attempts.
NZ media report that volunteers will continue to search along the coastline in the coming days and police will look for air search opportunities.
Gaunavou played on the wing under former Fiji 7s coach Iliesa Tanivula.
He also represented Fiji in the FORU Under 19 tournament in Nadi in 2008 and was a played on the wing for Nasinu Secondary school.
