Alex Morgan scored five goals as defending champions the United States opened the Women’s World Cup with a record-breaking 13-0 rout of Thailand.
It took just 12 minutes for the defending champions to open the scoring, Morgan heading home a header from four yards.

Samantha Mewis and Rose Lavelle each added a pair of goals for the United States, who broke the record for goals and margin of victory in a World Cup game.
Lindsey Horan, Megan Rapinoe, Mallory Pugh and Carli Lloyd also scored.
The previous record margin was German’s 11-0 victory over Argentina in 2007.

In other matches played today, New Zealand lost to Netherlands 0-1, Sweden beat Chile 2-0.
The matches played yesterday, Japan held Argentina to a nil-all draw, Canada beat Cameroon 1-0.
In tomorrow’s matches, Nigeria will face South Korea at 1am, Germany will play Spain at 4am, France will meet Norway at 7am while Australia will face Brazil on Friday at 4am.
