Wellington Phoenix rising star Sarpreet Singh is on the verge of a shock move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Phoenix general manager David Dome has confirmed the 20-year-old attacking midfielder was invited to Munich for a tour of the club’s facilities ahead of a possible transfer, after catching their eye during New Zealand’s impressive showing at the recent Under-20 World Cup, where they were eventually knocked out on penalties by Colombia.

Although it is not a done deal, Dome said the Phoenix would not stand in Singh’s way if the powerhouse European club tables a “fair” offer.

“If Bayern do put something on the table and they do agree terms with Sarpreet as well then there’s a very real possibility that he could end up in Europe at the next stage of his career,” Dome said.

Singh is the brightest talent to come out of the Phoenix since Marco Rojas, who was signed by German club Stuttgart after starring for Melbourne Victory but was unable to make a single first team appearance. But never before has a major European club signed a player directly from the Phoenix.

Although Singh struggled to make a considerable impact against the top-six clubs, he enjoyed a breakout 2018-19 A-League season, scoring five goals and creating eight assists.
