Fijian weightlifter calls for answers

October 20, 2018 12:15 am

Fijian weightlifter Eileen Cikamatana is seriously thinking of switching allegiance to another country.

This follows the ongoing controversy between Weightlifting Fiji and Levuka Weightlifting Club which has taken months to resolve.

In an email, Cikamatana is calling for answers from those in authority and has also requested the government to step in and deal with the issue.

“I am training here in New Caledonia at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute. I will be staying here until such time as I revaluate my career. I am deciding as to which pathway to take. To consider lifting for Fiji at the Olympic Games for me is no longer an option. I cannot qualify in time. I would consider changing countries.”

Fiji Sports Commission Chair Peter Mazey says they are working on bringing the impasse between Weightlifting Fiji and its Levuka-based lifters to an end soon.

Mazey says the parent body has agreed to work with the Levuka lifters who pulled out of the sport after the appointment of Iran-based coach Hossein Tavakoli.

The Fiji Sports Commission will meet with both parties to settle the ongoing issue so Levuka’s elite lifters can once again represent Fiji in future competitions.
