Fiji wins Plate title at Cape Town 7s

The Vodafone Fiji 7s side has won the plate title in the Cape Town 7s.

Fiji defeated USA 29-19 to win the Plate title.

Fiji was relegated to the Plate division after a shock 17-14 loss to France in the Cup quarterfinals.

Fiji then went on to beat Australia 38-19 in the Plate semi-finals.

Skipper, Osea Kolinisau says following the team’s exit from the Cup competition, the side was focused on trying to maintain its lead in the World Series standings.

“We tried to put ourselves in a good position when the rest of the series comes around. When we lost the main quarterfinal, it was all about trying to get maximum points and how we react.”

It was a weekend of upsets in Cape Town with Fiji, New Zealand and USA all bowing out in the Cup quarterfinals.

South Africa went on to win the Cup title, after beating Argentina 29-14 in a thrilling final encounter.

Fiji is now tied with South Africa at the top of the World Series standings with 35 points.

USA is tied with Argentina in second spot with 29 points while England has 26 points.

France is tied with New Zealand with 25 points.

Earlier today, France edged Kenya 28-26 to win the third place play-off.

The next leg of the World Series will be held in Wellington, New Zealand on January 30th and 31st next year.
