Fiji scrapes through pool stage in Cape Town

The Vodafone Fiji 7s side edged France 28-19 in its last Pool match to qualify for the Cup quarter-final of the Cape Town tournament.

Fiji was down 19-14 with two minutes to go in the match and if the Fijians had lost by five points or more they would have been eliminated from the main competition.

However, substitutes Setareki Bituniyata and Kitione Taliga combined well for Bituniyata to score under the post to take a two point lead, 21-19.

In the dying moments, Jerry Tuwai sealed the win with a solo effort securing a quarter-final against England.

Osea Kolinisau and Samisoni Viriviri were the other try scorers in the match.

Earlier, Fiji edged Kenya 28-22 with Viriviri scoring a brace and Emosi Mulevoro, and Sevouloni Mocenacagi grabbing a try each.

In the first match, Tuwai, Bituniyata, Jasa Veremalua, Joeli Lutumailagi and Taliga scored a try each for a 33-7 win over Japan.

Fiji will play England in the last quarter-final at 12.10am tomorrow.

In other quarter-finals, South Africa plays Wales at 11.04pm, New Zealand battles Kenya at 11.26pm while Scotland plays USA at 11.48pm.
