Fiji-PNG clash in semifinal

The Fiji men’s basketball side will face an uphill battle against Pacific Games hosts, Papua New Guinea when they clash in the semifinals this afternoon.

The Marques Whippy led side will be looking to exact revenge on PNG after losing to the hosts, 75-73 in pool play.

It will not be an easy task as the side will also have to contend with the vocal home crowd in Port Moresby.

The winner of the Fiji-PNG match at 2pm will face the winner of the second semifinal between Guam and Tahiti in the final, while the losers will clash in the bronze medal play-off.

In sailing, Salote Taylor will lead Fiji’s charge in the women’s laser radial event, which is now underway, alongside Faye Waqalevu.

Peter Thaggard and Michael Chan will be competing in the men’s laser event at 3pm.

The medal tally sees PNG in the lead with 35 gold, 18 silver and 17 bronze while Tahiti has amassed 19 gold,16 silver and 13 bronze.

New Caledonia sits in third spot with 18 gold, 18 silver and 15 bronze while Samoa has 17 gold, 17 silver and 1 bronze.

Fiji remains in 5th position with 11 gold, 18 silver and 14 bronze medals.
