Fiji beats Spain to book a spot in the quarters

The Fiji Airways mens 7s side is through to the cup quarterfinal of the Hamilton tournament after beating Spain 24-12 in the second pool match.

Eroni Sau and captain Jerry Tuwai scored the tries in the first half.

Fiji was down to five men when Sau and Mesulame Kunavula were shown the yellow card in the dying minutes of the first half.

Fiji led 12-5.

Replacements Alasio Naduva and Amenoni Nasilasila scored the tries in the second half as Fiji won its second match on day one.

Fiji 7s Coach Gareth Baber says the team has a lot to prove after their dismal performance in the Sydney 7s last weekend.

“They going in the right direction. It’s been a tough week after losing last weekend but obviously we know where we want to get, in the knock out stages we put ourselves their as we meet Australia in the last game.”

Fiji beat Wales 28-nil in its first match earlier in the day.

They face Australia in the last pool match at 6.50pm.

The Cup quarterfinals kick off at 11.36am tomorrow, semi-finals begin at 3.49pm and the final is scheduled at 7.03pm.
