Fiji 7s to re-use playing kit

November 6, 2015 6:06 pm

The Vodafone Fiji 7s side will use its playing kit from last season in the opening two legs of the World Sevens Series in Dubai and Cape Town next month.

Coach Ben Ryan was satisfied with the $5.4 million allocated in the 2016 National Budget for preparation to the Games and says this is one of the cost-saving measures undertaken.

“For me, there will be a big weight that will come off our shoulders, because we are scurrying around trying to find dollars to pay for camps, kits and everything. We’re going to the next tournament with our old kit from last year. It’s a tight budget but doesn’t mean that the money appears that we start throwing it around. It will be just as tight and will go to the right areas.”

The $2.3 million allocated for Fiji’s participation in the 2016 Rio Olympics includes the Fiji 7s side and Fiji Under-23 side, as well as the Flying Fijians Northern Hemisphere tour, Pacific Nations Cup, Rugby Under-20 World Cup and the Pacific Challenge.

Meanwhile, Ryan will break his current 26-member training squad into two teams to compete in the Macuata 7s tournament in Labasa next week and name a 16-member squad on Friday.

The first leg of the 2015/2016 World Series will be held in Dubai on December 3rd and 4th.
