The Digicel Fiji 7s rugby team is well on track with their defence of the title in Hong Kong after a convincing win over the hosts today 36-0 at So Kon Po Stadium.

Fiji raked in six tries – two each to Ilai Tinai, Samisoni Viriviri and Eremaso Benito with three conversions contributed from Tinai (2) and one from debutant, Emosi Mulevoro.

The runaway victory for Fiji in their opening match is a good start for the side and head coach, Alivereti Dere says it’s a matter of staying focussed on the task at hand.

“I’m particularly happy with the three new players – Donasio Ratubuli, Sakiusa Gavidi and Emosi Mulevoro – they were calm and did what was expected of them.”

Osea Kolinisau was unlucky to cop a yellow card for what the referee ruled as a dangerous tackle – simply a reminder to Fiji to stay on their toes with the penalties.

But for now, Fiji fans can rest easy on Day One but there’ll be tougher matches tomorrow with Spain and Canada to deal with.

In other results – Tier One games – Portugal upset Scotland 27-21 and Kenya beat USA 19-17 and Wales upset Australia 19-14.

Tier 2 games – Zimbabwe thumped Mexico 27-0, Georgia defeated Jamaica 27-17, Uruguay beat Chinese Taipei 24-12.

Left to play to end Day One is Russia-Cook Islands, Japan-Brazil and Tonga-Tunisia while the main competition sees Canada taking on Spain, Samoa-England, New Zealand-France and South Africa-Argentina.
