Fiji 7s coach works on instilling discipline

September 15, 2014 12:30 am

Vodafone Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan says he is looking to instill a disciplined approach in the team’s game pattern for the new IRB Sevens World Series season.

Ryan says the players within the 24-member training squad will be groomed on how to react to different defense and attack patterns.

He says this is what the other teams in the world circuit employ in order to maximize scoring opportunities and minimize mistakes.

“Occasionally, we stood off defenses and just tried to play too far in front of them, which works at lower levels but not on international levels any more. In defense, it’s the technical things, which is really around the rucking decisions. When we want to counter a ruck and when we want to leave a ruck alone. When we get those decisions right, we are going to lower our penalty counts. Penalties kill us and so do turnover balls.”

Ryan will field two teams in the Ovalau 7s at Nasau Park this weekend from which he will select his final squads for the Gold Coast 7s and Oceania tournaments to be played next month.
