The FIBA Under-18 Oceania Championship 2016 got underway this morning at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
While speaking at the official opening, Youth and Sports Minister Laisenia Tuitubou says, with only one qualification spot available for one men’s and women’s team to the U19 World Championship, this is sure to be a thrilling and hard fought affair.
“I know that with all the hard work you have put in during training, all spectators will be in for a wonderful display of athletic ability over these coming days.”
The eight nations competing in the Championships are host nation Fiji, Australia, Guam, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Tahiti.
The winners in each category will qualify for the World Championship next year in Italy for the Women’s and in Egypt for the men’s.
The FIBA U18 Oceania Championships ends on Saturday.
