Delana wins gold at Paralympics

Fiji’s Iliesa Delana has created history after winning the country’s first ever gold medal at the Paralympics.

Delana, competing in the F42 men’s high jump cleared the bar at 1.74 metres to beat six other athletes.

The 27-year-old has also set a new regional record and became only the second ever athlete from the Pacific to win a medal at the Paralympics.

He finished on the same height as India’s Girisha Hosanagara Nagarajgowda and Poland’s Lukasz Mamczarz, but won by taking less jumps.

He started his jumps from 1.65m, before finishing off with 1.74 m. He did try to better this mark but failed in all his three attempts at 1.77m.
