Claims Flying Fijians trio were bribed

November 6, 2012 1:25 am

Claims have surfaced today that three Fijian players were paid not to play for the national side at the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand.

The Independent newspaper in London has printed allegations made by former Racing metro coach Simon Mannix.

Mannix claims Sireli Bobo, Jone Qovu and Josh Matavesi were paid not to play for the Flying Fijians.

At the time, Bobo and Qovu cited personal reasons, while Matavesi had said he wanted to focus on club commitments, for missing out on playing for Fiji at the 2011 Pacific Nations Cup.

This effectively ruled them out of the World Cup.

The club has denied this and the International Rugby Board says they can only investigate if there is an official complaint lodged.

We have sought further comments from IRB and the FRU on the matter.
