The Chiefs have given their Super Rugby title hopes a boost after securing a vital win over the Crusaders in Fiji and leapfrogging them at the top of the New Zealand conference.
The 23-13 victory in a scrappy affair in Suva was full of determination, as the ‘home’ side outdid the Crusaders for game-smarts and execution.
This match was vital for the Chiefs, who have now moved one-point clear of the Crusaders on 46, which coach Dave Rennie felt was the cutoff line to make the finals.
Damian McKenzie was a key figure for the Chiefs in their win over the Crusaders at the ANZ Stadium.
The biggest cheer of the evening was when local player, Jone Macilai crossed over for the Crusaders, which was the only try for the red and blacks.
Chiefs 23 (James Lowe, Brad Weber tries; Damian McKenzie 2 con, 3 pen) Crusaders 13 (Jone Macilai try; Richie Mo’unga con, 2 pen) HT: 17-10.
