July 13, 2014 6:56 pm

Australia and New Zealand will be eligible for medals at the 2015 Pacific Games, which will be held in Papua New Guinea.

In a historic move for the first time ever the two nations will be part of the games, which in the past only had Pacific nations.

The two nations will be taking part in rugby sevens, sailing, taekwondo and weightlifting.

Team Fiji Chef de Mission, Cathy Wong, says the national team is ready to face-off with the best from the two nations.

“There was a lot of debate but at the end it was decided that they coming in under the Pacific Games charter and under that charter you can’t differentiate and everyone who competes, competes for the one medal. And yes we can compete for that medal.”

This means the Fiji sevens team could be facing the New Zealand and Australia in the games, a first outside of the IRB World Series and the Oceania tournament.
