Children stuck to their mobile phones and TV sets are what we see as normal in this day and age, however, Peni Bulukiobo of Bouma District School in Taveuni has proved that this is just a stereotype.

The young Taveuni lad was able to balance his school work, look after his unwell mother, and win a gold medal for team Taveuni at the 2019 Chow Games.

Bulikiobo says he is the middle child of eight siblings and life has not been easy so far.

The young man says not having his parents present when he was receiving the award was saddening, however, he knows they are proud of him.

He won gold for Taveuni in the under 14 1500 meters event during the 2019 Chow Games.

Bouma District School Teacher Ilisono Bulikiomo was all praise for Peni.

“Peni he is very quiet, he’s not outspoken, but most of the time you will see his hard work, silently he does it in the classroom then we come for sports outdoor activities.”

Young Peni has set an example for young people in that despite struggles, determination wins.
