FASANOC President Joe Rodan Senior confirmed they have nine athletes that are potential Gold medal prospects for team Fiji in the Pacific Games in Samoa.

Rodan says these top athletes have qualified through the A-standard qualification set forward by Athletics Fiji.

Rodan adds sending athletes who have qualified through the A-standard grade will heighten Fiji’s chances in the Pacific Games’ medal prospects.

“Because our selection is based on getting all our athletes to qualify A-standard because from our point of view is more or less a sure shot of Gold medal. As for us we really want to improve the standard of athletics in Fiji.”

Rodan says Fiji is slowly picking up and improving its field athletes compared to previous years.

“But in the jumps we have a high-jumper. We have two of our athletes that have qualified for the A-standard in the high jump. In the triple-jump we’ve got one of our athlete that have qualified in the triple-jump under the A-standard, in the shot put too I think Mustafa have also qualified over the A-standard.”

Athletics Fiji will be looking at improving its performance not only in the track events, but in the field events as well this year.
