Artificial pitch to test teams: Ryan

Vodafone Fiji 7s coach, Ben Ryan says playing on artificial surfaces presents a unique challenge for teams in the World Series.

Referring to the pitch at Sam Boyd Stadium and B.C Place Stadium, the venues for the upcoming Las Vegas and Vancouver 7s respectively, Ryan says it will be interesting to see how teams will adapt.

Some challenges associated with artificial pitches includes a slippery surface and an elusive bounce of the ball.

Fiji proved it can excel on the artificial pitch when it claimed the Las Vegas 7s last season, hammering New Zealand 35-19 in the final.

“It’s a short turnaround for all the teams. It’s an artificial field and we have talked about that already. Then we go to Vancouver where it is an artificial ground and it’s indoor so it will be new for everyone.”

The final 12-member squad for the Las Vegas and Vancouver 7s tournaments will be named next week.

The Las Vegas 7s will be held on March 5th-7th.
