Over 200,000 young people are expected to vote in the general elections – many for the first time.
With elections only 81 days away, participants of the 2014 Youth and Sports Conference were briefed on the electoral process by the Minister Responsible for Elections Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
He advised the young people to choose carefully who they will vote for.
“When a political party comes to you and wants to campaign they must have a policy that will appeal to everybody. They should have policies that will be for the benefit of the entire country, not just for one particular group or for one particular area. It must be beneficial for all.”
Sayed-Khaiyum also reminded them that it’s essential they know and understand the fundamental functions of government, parliament, and more importantly to understand what the political parties are preaching in the lead up to the elections.
