World Maritime Day brings together stakeholders in the industry

World Maritime Day- a special event for the Maritime Industry in Fiji was celebrated as stakeholders gathered to discuss issues within the maritime community.

A celebration held at the Suva foreshore aimed to focus attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the maritime environment.

The theme for this year’s celebration is Maritime education and training.

Minister for Transport Parveen Bala says with this year’s celebration theme as Maritime Education and training- it emphasizes the importance of maritime education to ensure long term sustainability of the industry.

“To our youths and high school students, the maritime industry has a lot to offeri wish to raise a misconception of the maritime industry that’s purely a seagoing career. Therefore youths and students are urged to visit booths to enquire on these career opportunities.”

The celebration also has the Maritime Careers Exposition which will serve as a platform for career development in the industry.

A ten minute silence and a wreath were also thrown into the sea to remember the lives of seafarers that were lost in the sea.
