Workers have freedom of association: AG

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has stated that workers are given the freedom to join any trade unions.

Speaking exclusively to FBC News, Sayed-Khaiyum says various Unions should now focus on the bigger issue which is growing the economy.

Sayed-Khaiyum made this comments after Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions General Secretary Attar Singh says that the Joint Implementation report that was signed by government and FTUC does not reflect Freedom of Association for Workers.

Sayed-Khaiyum says now that employees issue has been resolved by the government, Unions and the International Labour Organisation, workers still have the freedom of association.

“It means that anybody can join the trade unions, anybody cannot join a trade union, and anybody can join a number of trade unions as members simultaneously if they like or you can have what we called enterprise trade unions where you can belong to a trade unions you know in house trade unions but of course the right of representation by anybody.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says the government will ensure that every decision should be made to benefit all Fijians
