The Education Ministry will safeguard the learning environment of students at Holy Trinity Anglican Primary school.

This if the stop-work order issued against WG Friendship Plaza in Suva be lifted.

Minister responsible, Rosy Akbar says if the project resumes – ministry officials will be deployed to the site.

In June, the Suva City Council stepped in after Plaza works encroached into the school property.

The school had also raised issues about noise from the construction, which hindered learning. There were also accusations that workers had put students at risk.

“I don’t know when they will start progressing with the other construction work but it has to do with a building that is very close to a school premises then obviously we will have to step in to ensure that our children’s studies are not affected and all OHS measures are put in place. But should the project start then obviously ministry officials will have to go and check that the work does not compromise the learning environment of our children at Holy Trinity.”

Local Government Minister, Premila Kumar confirms the stop-work order for WG Friendship Plaza is still in place.

“The school and WG – they need to sort it out. In other words it’s a case before the court and our suggestion was why don’t use mediation to solve it.”

WG Construction company spokesperson, William Wu says they will not comment on the issue.
