February 1, 2019 4:41 pm

There are 28 women now serving in various capacities of the Fiji Navy with more having qualified during the recent recruitment drive.

Navy Commander, Captain Humphrey Tawake says the inclusion of women which only became a reality last year has already proved its worth.

“I think it has been very good, we’ve gradually evolved, especially in a male-dominated working environment, we have males being predominant in the last 42 years.”

Commander Tawake says the difference made by women is evident as they are more detailed in their approach to work.

He adds while it has taken more than four decades to include the opposite sex, it is nonetheless a timely inclusion that will serve the navy better in the future.

Meanwhile, 15 more women are currently going through the specialized 12-week navy training.
