Woman takes stand in the trial of her ex-husband

The trial of a taxi driver who allegedly stabbed his 43 year old ex wife and a 44 year old man outside a supermarket in Nakasi last year started in the Suva High Court this morning.

47-year-old Rakesh Narayan is charged with One Count of Attempted Murder and One Count of Act with Intent to Cause Grievous Harm.

Narayan allegedly stabbed Sakindra Devi on her neck in a supermarket car park on the 16th of March last year.

A 43 year old man who tried to assist the woman was also allegedly stabbed in the process.

Devi took the stand in court today and described the incident from the day of the alleged offense.

She said on the day of the alleged offense she was at work and at around 8:40pm her brother called her to inform that Narayan had allegedly said to him that he will kill Devi.

Devi told the court that her brother told her not to come out of the supermarket.

She further added that later her husband 44-year-old Rakash Deo came to pick her and it is then when she came out of the supermarket.

She said her ex-husband allegedly attacked both of them.

As a result of the wounds she suffered Devi told the court that she was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit at the CWM Hospital in Suva for almost a month.

She said the incident has affected her in many ways.

Devi added her jaw has shifted to one side permanently and she still feels the pain during cold weather.

The victim who still has scars from the wound on her face said even though her health is not well, she has to force herself to work since she has to support her two children.

The trial continues next week.
