White summoned to court for inaccurate reporting

May 10, 2018 7:30 pm

Fiji Times reporter Zeke White was summoned today in the Suva High Court for inaccurate reporting.

High Court Judge, Justice Salesi Temo said that it was concerning that the report on Timoci Lolohea’s sentencing was reported incorrectly in the newspaper’s front page.

Temo said that it’s important to report accurately as people take legal lessons from what is being reported.

He said the newspaper had reported 18 years imprisonment for Lolohea when it was mandatory life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 18 years.

He said that journalists are able to get a copy of the sentencing if they need it as it is readily available to them.

Fiji Times legal representative, Jon Apted said White did not deliberately set out to misreport the sentencing and apologies on the matter.

Justice Temo said that he had thought of holding Contempt of Court proceedings, however he said he won’t do that.
