What is expected out of Paris-COP21

A global Climate Change Summit in Paris France this month is just the beginning of a five-year process towards goals 2020.

Director Climate Change Division, Peter Emberson, says member countries will ensure a strong and robust climate regime that will safeguard planet earth top the climate change agenda in Paris at the end of the month.

Emberson says its important for Fiji to ensure that at least an absolute minimum is taken away from COP 21 and to commit to build as we go towards 2020.

“The success of Paris would be measured against how it produces a fair platform for countries to continue to build up till 2020,to ensure that is binding on all countries to drastically reduced their green house gas emissions that will safeguard the planet from runaway climate change.”

In Copenhagen in 2009 and in Cancún in 2010, developed countries committed to raising $100 billion per year by 2020 to help developing countries cope with climate change.
