Fiji Human Rights Commission Director Ashwin Raj questioned Mosese Bulitavu’s sincerity after the SODELPA MP continue to stand by the biased comments he had apologised for.

Raj says Bulitavu’s social media post exaggerated and exploited the already charged atmosphere of racial antagonism.

Raj says Bulitavu will have to be held accountable for his facebook post that incites hatred towards a particular group.

He says Bulitavu’s facebook degrading post has caused a lot of damage to the targeted group.

“If he is apologizing now and he insist he stands by his statement than what is he actually apologizing about? If he hasn’t done anything wrong why apologize? So it’s a very warped logic of racism.”

Raj adds a precedent needs to be set to hold people accountable for their public statements.

Following Bultitavu’s social media post, Raj reveals they’re now witnessing a surge in hate messages directed towards the Indo-Fijian community

“It is not okay to say that it is fine to beat women up. It’s not cool. Any form of hate speech targeting anyone on any prohibited ground of discrimination is simply not acceptable. I want an important precedent to be set. I want this person to be held accountable I want him to face the full brunt of the law.”

Raj added says while the government works to unite Fijians, such vile comments will continue stoke racism and divide the nation.
