April 19, 2012 5:03 am

The Nadi Weather Office has issued a heavy rain alert.

Forecaster Amit Singh says the alert is aimed at Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Northern Lau, Lomaiviti and the Yasawa group.

“This alert is due to a trough of low pressure which is now to the North of Fiji, which is expected to intensify and move over the northern and eastern part of the group from later tomorrow which is Friday and remain on the group until Monday.”

A warning for damaging heavy swells is also in force.

“Mostly for the low lying coastal areas of the Southern half of Viti Levu, Kadavu, Mamanuca and the Lau and Lomaviti group. We expect the swell height be as high as 5 meters over open waters. So there is a possibility of sea flooding of low lying coastal areas.”

And word from the weather office is a rainy weekend ahead.
