West cane farmers take part in consultations

The sugar industry stakeholders have been meeting farmers in various cane sectors in the Western Division.

The stakeholders include the Sugarcane Growers Council, Fiji Sugar Corporation, the Sugar Industry Tribunal, Sugar Research Institute of Fiji and the South Pacific Fertilizers Limited.

SPF general manager, Ashween Ram says this provides them an opportunity to listen to the views of farmers on how to improve the sugar industry.

The FSC is working on a policy that will guide the industry and says farmers input is very important.

FSC chief operating officer, Navin Chandra says they will be taking into account the constructive views put forward by the farmers.

Chandra says some of the areas that needs to be re-looked at include the cane transportation system and the cane harvesting.

The next round of consultations will be held in Labasa.
