The Social Welfare Ministry aims to change the criteria for recipients applying for the Family Assistance Program.
The decision is based on recommendations by a World Bank team, who recently conducted a survey on the Social Welfare Assistance Scheme.
Minister – Dr Jiko Luveni says the World Bank report shows there are recipients who do not qualify for the Family Assistance Program yet they are getting the benefit.
“A challenge that we faced is that a lot of Social Welfare recipients are really not the deserving cases and there are other deserving cases in the country that need the assistance from the Social Welfare scheme.”
Around four percent out of the 35 per cent people living in poverty are being assisted by the Social Welfare Assistance scheme.
