Weekday kitchen waste collection starts today

July 8, 2018 5:25 pm

In a bid to create cleaner and healthier municipalities, the government has introduced a new initiative of weekday kitchen waste collection.

This first phase starts today in the country’s heavily populated and largest municipality, Nasinu and will run through till Friday.

Local Government Minister Parveen Kumar says this is a good initiative as it will assist municipal councils in caring for the environment.

Residents of Nasinu are advised to place all kitchen waste on roadsides or cul-de-sacs before 9am every day.

Residents are also advised that all waste be properly placed in garbage bags for collection.

Those who refuse to properly pack kitchen waste in bags or place them after the allocated time may incur a fine under the Litter Act 2008.

Meanwhile, the 2018-2019 National Budget allocated $1million to standardize rubbish bins across the country, beginning in Nasinu.

Additionally, an allocation of $1.5 million was allocated towards the collection of rubbish by the government.
