Fiji needs to develop a culture of age friendly now, with our growing ageing population urges the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation.

Permanent Secretary, Dr Josefa Koroivueta says by 2050 there will be more elderly population in the country.

Dr Koroivueta says it’s vital to instil the values of care for the elderly within today’s youth, as they will be the ones looking after our senior citizens.

“We need to train and encourage our families that the older persons belong in their homes. We are living in a changed environments with nuclear families but the best person for the older persons are their families.”

Dr Koroivueta says too often the Ministry receives reports of elderly people being abandoned at senior citizen homes or left on our streets.

He adds it’s important to be inclusive and give the care and attention these elderly parents or grandparents need.
