The Natabua Wastewater de-sludging and odour control project is aimed at improving the livelihoods of Fijians residing in Lautoka.

Speaking during a public consultation, Water Authority Wastewater Team Leader West Engtesh Permal informed those present that work needs to commence as this is long overdue.

“The last de-sludge was undertaken about 25 years ago, so there is a lot of sludge in the ponds. We also have the Environment Unit who will also be strictly monitoring this project.”

Permal says the project is being contracted to Intergroup Limited and is expected to take place for 6-12 months.

De-sludging works are also earmarked to take place at the Olosara Wastewater Treatment Plant in Sigatoka and at the Navakai Wastewater Treatment Plant in Nadi.

De-sludging is the process of removing sediments by draining and cleaning a tank.
