Villagers in Kadavu and Lomaiviti prepare for the worst

The Maritime Islands directly on the path of Cyclone Gita are preparing for the worst.

FBC News spoke to villagers on the island of Kadavu and Lomaiviti who say the weather is calm at the moment with no rain and only light winds.

Turaga-ni-Koro from Nasau in Kadavu, Wisale Naga says they have converted the village community hall into an evacuation centre with emergency necessities needed for the cyclone.

“It’s windy but calm with no rain, it’s been like this since yesterday afternoon into the night and this morning, there’s been no change in the weather. However, the villagers are preparing.”

Meanwhile, a resident of Gau in Lomaiviti, Sivorosi Logavatau says all temporary sheds have been removed and safety shutters have been installed.

Turaga-ni-Koro from Nalotu in Kadavu, Anikekini Bainimoli says evacuation centers have opened with villagers sorting shelter at the primary school and village hall.

Bainimoli says strong winds are swaying over the island with seas gradually becoming rough.

The Turaga-ni-Koro has advised the villagers to restrict movement, cancel all fibre boat trips and secure houses.
