The identification of resources using the newly launched Vanua Geospatial Information System application will help proper infrastructure growth in the Pacific.

Senior Advisor for Geo-science, Energy and Maritime Division from Pacific Community Fiji Robert Smith says the application is only used in Fiji at the moment but shortly it will be used by other countries in the region.

Smith says countries in the region are going through rapid infrastructure growth thus identifying the correct material for building infrastructure is vital.

“You can’t build your roads, you can’t have your footpath, you can’t have good schools, you can’t have secure housing, all our goods and services that come from offshore require good jetties and wharfs, so you can move products and everything else. And to build all those, you need geoscience background information, so you can do the designs correctly.”

Smith says the application will also identify areas with the proper minerals and material available, thus increasing efficiency in the sector.
