July 4, 2014 1:08 am

The Minister for Labour Jone Usamate will be traveling to New Zealand on Monday to pave the way for Fijians to be employed as seasonal workers in the land of the long white clouds.

Permanent Secretary for Labour Taito Waqa says, New Zealand has expressed willingness to re-offer the initiative after a lapse of twenty seven years.

The visit to the land of the long white clouds by Labour Minister is historical and a milestone achievement between Fiji and New Zealand as the Fijian government prepares for the general elections.

“It was established back in 1970’s and 1980’s between the New Zealand government and Fiji government that seasonal workers especially from rural areas unemployed to work in farms…they work there to clear the areas for cultivation, fruit picking or any areas of agriculture in nature.”

Waqa says Usamate was invited by the New Zealand government.
